Mayor Cory Booker receives a cheque for $100,000 from Nestlé
April 16, 2012
Dear Mayor Booker,
We understand that in an effort to address childhood obesity, under the First Lady Michelle Obama's Campaign, “Let’s Move!” you have partnered the City of Newark with Nestle to implement a “free” 2 year program to educate about breastfeeding and nutrition at all of Newark’s 15 Family Success Centers.
We understand you have been briefed about Nestlé's cynical and predatory marketing practices.
We are asking you show leadership and cancel Newark’s partnership with Nestlé.
You are one of the most prominent municipal politicians in North America. Earlier this year Mark and Craig Kielburger, co-funders of Free the Children, wrote an op-ed piece about you that was carried in major daily newspapers right across Canada, including in our city. They said,
"If Canadians and Americans want leaders who inspire us, we just have to look around. We must find the Cory Bookers in our communities, and support and encourage them."
When you accept this money and this partnership with Nestlé, you lend the strength and cache of your personal brand to a company that has been criticized by worldwide for exploiting children to further its bottom line.
Nestlé's Infant Nutrition President and CEO Marilyn Knox says, in an address hosted on your own YouTube channel, "we want to recognize Mayor Booker specifically for not only what he is doing here, but the example of taking Newark and turning it into actually an example, a role model to replicate in other places..."
Your decisions here WILL INFLUENCE other mayors in other cities. What you are giving Nestlé is worth far more to Nestlé than $100,000 they will be spending in your community. They are gaining by aligning themselves with your respected brand.
You can show true leadership across North America and truly protect the health of children in your community and elsewhere by saying No to Nestlé's dollars. Please cancel this arrangement.
on behalf of of the Breastfeeding Action Committee of Edmonton (BACE)
